The smell of gunpowder, window-rattling explosions, enormous towers engulfed in flames... what sounds like an embattled war zone is actually a description of the highlight of Valencia's festival calendar: Las Fallas.

Las Fallas is an incredible festival that ushers in springtime with all sorts of bangs, blasts and booms. Residents essentially plan all year round to commission the construction of dozens of "fallas," massive pieces of art constructed around a wooden skeleton and covered in papier-mâché to create elaborate satirical human and animal figures. These masterpieces, constructed by teams of designers and architects, often reach over 20 meters (65 ft) high!

At the festival's pinnacle, awards are given and then colorful fallas are set ablaze throughout the entire city in what could possibly be the largest legal pyrotechnic display in the world!
