Levels of Spanish
Enforex's courses are structured into 6 different Spanish language levels, ranging from Basic (1) to Proficiency (6). This structure falls under the guidelines of the Instituto Cervantes as well as those of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Plus, our 6 levels system matches up perfectly with the U.S. university system, meaning that, upon your return to your home school, you will be able to receieve the appropriate credits for the Spanish language course you take here at Enforex's partner school in Tenerife.
How do you know which course level is the right one for you? On your very first day at Enforex and just prior to your first class, we will assess your level of Spanish by means of a written and oral test. We will subsequently place you into the appropriate course level. With the exception of level 6 (Proficiency), each level is then further divided into three sublevels; this way, you can feel 100% confident that you are placed in the course best suited to your knowledge of and experience with the Spanish language.
Level 1 ("A1"): Basic
This Spanish level is for those students who are taking a Spanish language course for the very first time. Along with acquiring a basic understanding of Spanish culture, society and traditions, you will form a solid base of language skills. You will learn how to form important grammatical and communicative structures in Spanish, such as verb conjugations in the present tense, talking about yourself and about your likes and dislikes, greeting others, giving an opinion, and describing yourself and others.
Level 2 ("A2"): Elementary
This Spanish language course level is aimed at students who have some previous knowledge of basic Spanish structures and vocabulary. You will increase your awareness of Spanish culture and society as well as acquire new and useful communicative skills. You will increase your grasp of Spanish grammar and vocabulary and be able to express yourself in various communicative contexts.
Skills include: conjugation of verbs and narration in the past tense, expression of opinions, formation of comparisons, utilization of commands and differentiation between the verbs ser and estar.
Level 3 ("B1"): Intermediate
Our Intermediate level is designed for incoming students who already have a handle on some of the language's more complex grammatical structures as well as a good Spanish vocabulary base. You will make the important transition from expressing yourself at a basic and functional level to achieving a certain degree of fluency in the language along with a greater comprehension of the Spanish way of life. By improving your understanding of both linguistic and extra-linguistic structures, you will note an improvement in your ability to effectively communicate with Spanish-speakers.
Skills covered: reviewing the past and present tenses, using the conditional and future tenses, expressing wants and needs through the subjunctive, expressing courtesy, forming negative commands and expanding upon your ability to effectively express opinions.
Level 4 ("B2"): Advanced
Students at the advanced level already feel comfortable communicating in social situations and can speak with a certain degree of fluency. You will increase your ability to debate issues and express detailed options; to join phrases and sentences in a cohesive manner; and to converse about more specific topics outside the realm of typical linguistic interchanges.
Skills covered: domination of the subjunctive in all its contexts and comparing it to the indicative, utilization of periphrases, expression of hypotheses in the past and present, debate and narration, construction of the passive voice, and in-depth expression of likes, dislikes and feelings.
Level 5 ("C1"): Superior
Our Superior Spanish level is for incoming students who already have a solid understanding of the Spanish language and are able to communicate effectively. Students learn to express their ideas at a more abstract level by perfecting grammar skills and dominating colloquial expressions, as well as increasing their familiarity with Spanish culture.
Level 6 ("C2"): Proficiency
This final course level is for those students with a high command of the Spanish language who are looking to perfect all areas of linguistic proficiency en route to becoming fully bilingual. Course content will center on developing a global perspective of Spanish culture in relation to their particular field of interest as well as refining oral and written skills.
